Creepy Oddity: Mysterious Glass Coffin

Alright, now it’s time for some strange stories from history! (and yes, I literally get all my weird history stories off Atlas Obscura, that website is my life, haha).

In 1969 Mississippi America, some farmhands working on an old plantation called Egypt, felt their backhoe crunch into something beneath the field.

They unearthed a cast-iron and glass coffin, and just like Snow White’s glass coffin, the occupant inside was visible.

It was a young woman dressed in an expensive red dress from at least a century earlier. The glass coffin was filled with preservative alcohol, so her corpse was remarkably preserved.

Unfortunately, the backhoe had cracked the glass when it struck, and the alcohol leaked, so the young woman’s body didn’t stay preserved for much longer.

She got a reburial nearby … and to this day, no one knows who she is, why she was preserved, or why she was buried under a random field in a glass, clear coffin instead of officially in a cemetery.

What a weird mystery, right?
