Strange stories and folk tales

A little update on the books I’m reading and love, what I’m working on for my own writing and also some old fairytale illustrations … fun!

A fairytale illustration

Or at least, a folktale illustration, in this case. 🌙 This book is called Norwegian Folk Tales and is illustrated by Erik Werenskiold and Theodor Kittelsen.
.
This photo is a beautiful illustration of a princess riding a white polar bear, from a story called WHITE BEAR KING VALEMON.
.
I was already familiar with a version of this same tale called ‘East of the Sun West of the Moon’, and this one is a little different, but still follows much the same story. Basically, girl is stolen by a polar bear and brought to his castle. At night in the dark he turns into a man, but she mustn’t look at him. She breaks the rules, takes a peek with a candle and he is stolen away from her, and she must go on an epic journey to bring him home again.
.
I’ve always loved the image of a girl riding a polar bear, and have seen so many different artist impressions of this beautiful scene. This one is a lovely one too.

The author I own most books from

My most owned author is definitely Juliet Marillier, whom I just adore! I actually own a few more than shown in this photo, which are strewn about the house in strange locations.
.
Juliet Marillier writes lush and romantic historical fantasies, mostly set in ancient Ireland, but also a little bit of England and Scandi stuff too. They are always very romantic and infused with fairytale elements and magic. I adore her writing, her heroines and her stories.
.
This photo shows 13 of her books, and she is by far the author I own most books of. Also, I love those pre-raphaelite book covers … so pretty! I am a huge fan of romantic pre-raphaelite art!!
.
My forever most re-read Juliet Marillier books are (in no particular order):

Well of Shades
– Daughter of the Forest
– Son of the Shadows
– Heir to Sevenwaters

I have read all of those books a ridiculous amount of times. But I still feel like they are perfect!
