Haunting and murderous sirens and excellent medieval television

I’ve been watching the latest season of Netflix’s Love Death Robots anthology of short animated stories (season 3). I’ve always enjoyed this show, which is filled with strange, wild and often very dark little stories, all animated in different styles. But this season, one of the stories actually blew me away and I cannot stop thinking about it.

Jibaro is the final animated short (about 20 mins) in the latest season of the show, and is unlike anything I have ever seen before. It is violent, disturbing and unsettling, but also utterly beautiful in a way that I can’t get out of my head. It feels like a medieval fable, and it is DARK (definitely not one for the kids) and I just loved it. It is a surreal story, following a deaf conquistador knight who meets an otherworldly siren, and it really does feel like the kind of story people in medieval times might have told around a campfire.

Definitely give it a watch if you don’t mind your stories dark, beautiful and disturbing. (Also, did I mention the animation style is just out of this world? Gosh.)

An excellent medieval television series!

I finally checked out a show called The Last Kingdom (which my lovely author friend Kristy Fairlamb has been recommending forever! Thanks Kristy!). I’ve watched nearly all 5 seasons with my husband over the past 3 weeks … so I think you can guess that I am loving it.

The Last Kingdom is a gritty historical drama (complete with mad battles, real history, marauding warriors and royal intrigue). It’s based on the Saxon Stories book series written by Bernard Cornwell and it is amazing.

It’s set in England in the 800s in a time of great turmoil, with Danes invading from the north (basically now known as vikings), as well as Saxon kingdoms, the Welsh, and the Britons (did I forget anyone?).

Anyway, it’s bloody great! Definitely watch it if you can!
